ITS ADVISORY NUMBER:
2020-169
DATE(S) ISSUED:
Thursday, December 17, 2020
SUBJECT:
A Vulnerability in Hewlett Packard Enterprise Systems Insight Management Could Allow for Remote Code Execution
OVERVIEW:
A vulnerability has been discovered in Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Systems Insight Management (SIM) which could allow for remote code execution. HPE SIM is a management and remote support automation solution for multiple HPE servers, storage, and networking products. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow for remote code execution. Depending on the privileges associated with the user an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than those who operate with administrative user rights.
THREAT INTELLIGENCE:
There are currently no reports of this vulnerability being exploited in the wild.
SYSTEMS AFFECTED:
- HPE Systems Insight Manager versions 7.6.X

DESCRIPTION:
A vulnerability has been discovered in Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Systems Insight Management (SIM) which could allow for remote code execution. This vulnerability results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data that can result in the deserialization of untrusted data making it possible for an attacker to leverage it to execute code on servers running vulnerable software. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow for remote code execution. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view; change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than those who operate with administrative user rights.
ACTIONS:
- After appropriate testing, immediately install the updates provided by Hewlett Packard to vulnerable systems.
- Run all software as a non-privileged user (one without administrative privileges) to diminish the effects of a successful attack.
- Remind users not to visit websites or follow links provided by unknown or untrusted sources.
- Inform and educate users regarding the threats posed by hypertext links contained in emails or attachments especially from un-trusted sources.
- Apply the Principle of Least Privilege to all systems and services.
