Subject:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS13-080)
Overview:

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Microsofts web browser, Internet Explorer, which could result in remote code execution. If a user views a specially crafted website using Internet Explorer, an attacker could gain the same privileges as the logged on user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Description:

Ten vulnerabilities have been discovered in Microsofts web browser, Internet Explorer, which could result in remote code execution. These vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted webpage using Internet Explorer. One vulnerability that is currently the subject of targeted attacks is a user-after-free vulnerability in CDisplayPointer triggered with the "onpropertychange" event handler. The exploit code for this issue uses heap-spray to allocate a small ROP chain around address 0x14141414 and is designed to target only IE8 running on Windows XP for Korean and Japanese language-based users using a JavaScript code.

An attacker who successfully exploits any of these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the current user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Actions:
  • Apply appropriate patches provided by Microsoft to vulnerable systems immediately after appropriate testing.
  • Run all software as a non-privileged user (one without administrative privileges) to diminish the effects of a successful attack.
  • Remind users not to visit un-trusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or un-trusted sources.
