Tuesday, November 12, 2013
Subject:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS13-088)
Overview:

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Microsofts web browser, Internet Explorer, which could result in remote code execution. If a user views a specially crafted website using Internet Explorer, an attacker could gain the same privileges as the logged on user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Description:

Ten vulnerabilities have been discovered in Microsofts web browser, Internet Explorer, which could result in remote code execution. These vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted webpage using Internet Explorer.  There are two information disclosure vulnerabilities that  are caused by the way Internet Explorer handles specially crafted web content when generating print previews and the way Internet Explorer improperly processes CSS special characters.  The other eight vulnerabilities are memory corruption vulnerabilities due to Internet Explorer improperly accessing objects in memory and could allow remote code execution.

An attacker who successfully exploits any of these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the current user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Actions:
  • Apply appropriate patches provided by Microsoft to vulnerable systems immediately after appropriate testing.
  • Run all software as a non-privileged user (one without administrative privileges) to diminish the effects of a successful attack.
  • Remind users not to visit un-trusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or un-trusted sources.
