Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS15-018)

ITS Advisory Number:
2015-021
Date(s) Issued:
Tuesday, March 10, 2015
Subject:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS15-018)
Overview:

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Microsoft's web browser, Internet Explorer. These vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution or an elevation of privilege if a user views a specially crafted webpage in Internet Explorer. An attacker who successfully exploits this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Systems Affected:
  • Internet Explorer 11
  • Internet Explorer 10
  • Internet Explorer 9
  • Internet Explorer 8
  • Internet Explorer 7
  • Internet Explorer 6

Description:

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Microsoft's web browser, Internet Explorer. These vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution or an elevation of privilege if a user views a specially crafted page in Internet Explorer. The vulnerabilities are as follows:

  • Remote code execution vulnerabilities exist when Internet Explorer improperly accesses objects in memory. These vulnerabilities could corrupt memory in such a way that an attacker could execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user.[CVE-2015-0056][CVE-2015-0099][CVE-2015-0100][CVE-2015-1622][CVE-2015-1623][CVE-2015-1624][CVE-2015-1625][CVE-2015-1626][CVE-2015-1634]
  • A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that the VBScript engine, when rendered in Internet Explorer, handles objects in memory. [CVE-2015-0032]
  • An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists when Internet Explorer does not properly enforce cross-domain policies.[CVE-2015-0072]
  • An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists when Internet Explorer does not properly validate permissions under specific conditions, potentially allowing script to be run with elevated privileges.[CVE-2015-1627]

An attacker who successfully exploits some of these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the current user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Actions:

We recommend the following actions be taken:

  • Apply appropriate patches provided by Microsoft to vulnerable systems immediately after appropriate testing.
  • Run all software as a non-privileged user (one without administrative privileges) to diminish the effects of a successful attack.
  • Remind users not to visit un-trusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or un-trusted sources.
