This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Edge. Microsoft Edge is a web browser included with Windows 10. The most severe of the vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted webpage using Microsoft Edge. An attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the current user. Customers whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than those who operate with administrative user rights.
- Microsoft Windows 10
- Microsoft Windows 10 version 1511
Multiple vulnerabilities exist in Microsoft Edge due to the way objects in memory are improperly accessed. The vulnerabilities are as follows:
-
Microsoft Browser Memory Corruption Vulnerability: [CVE-2016-0102CVE-2016-0105, CVE-2016-0109, CVE-2016-0110, CVE-2016-0111]
-
Microsoft Edge Memory Corruption Vulnerability: [CVE-2016-0116, CVE-2016-0123, CVE-2016-0124, CVE-2016-0129, CVE-2016-0130]
-
Microsoft Edge Information Disclosure Vulnerability: [CVE-2016-0125]
These vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to execute remote code by luring a victim to a malicious website. Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could result in an attacker gaining the same rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.
- After appropriate testing, apply appropriate patches provided by Microsoft to vulnerable systems.
- Run all software as a non-privileged user (one without administrative privileges) to diminish the effects of a successful attack.
- Remind users not to visit untrusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or untrusted sources.
- Do not open email attachments from unknown or untrusted sources or suspicious emails from trusted sources.
