Overview: 

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in iCloud, Safari, iTunes, Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, iOS and tvOS. The most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow for arbitrary code execution.

  • iCloud is a cloud storage service.
  • Safari is a web browser available for OS X.
  • iTunes is a media player, media library, online radio broadcaster, and mobile device management application developed by Apple.
  • Mojave is a desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers.
  • High Sierra is a desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers.
  • Sierra is a desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers.
  • iOS is a mobile operating system for mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
  • tvOS is an operating system for the fourth-generation Apple TV digital media player.

Successful exploitation of the most severe of these vulnerabilities could result in arbitrary code execution within the context of the application, an attacker gaining the same privileges as the logged-on user, or the bypassing of security restrictions. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Safari, iCloud, iTunes, iOS, Shortcuts, tvOS, macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. The most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow for arbitrary code execution. Details of these vulnerabilities are as follows: 

  • A certificate validation issue existed in configuration profiles. This was addressed with additional checks. (CVE-2018-4436)
  • A denial of service issue was addressed by removing the vulnerable code. (CVE-2018-4460)
  • A lock screen issue allowed access to contacts on a locked device. This issue was addressed with improved state management. (CVE-2018-4430)
  • A logic issue existed resulting in memory corruption. This was addressed with improved state management. (CVE-2018-4438)
  • A logic issue was addressed with improved restrictions. (CVE-2018-4435)
  • A logic issue was addressed with improved state management. (CVE-2018-4440)
  • A logic issue was addressed with improved validation. (CVE-2018-4439)
  • Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed with improved memory handling. (CVE-2018-4427, CVE-2018-4437, CVE-2018-4441, CVE-2018-4442, CVE-2018-4443, CVE-2018-4449, CVE-2018-4450, CVE-2018-4463, CVE-2018-4465, CVE-2018-4464)
  • A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved input validation. (CVE-2018-4461)
  • A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved state management. (CVE-2018-4447)
  • A memory initialization issue was addressed with improved memory handling. (CVE-2018-4431)
  • An out-of-bounds read was addressed with improved input validation. (CVE-2018-4434)
  • A spoofing issue existed in the handling of URLs. This issue was addressed with improved input validation. (CVE-2018-4429)
  • A type confusion issue was addressed with improved memory handling. (CVE-2018-4303)
  • A validation issue was addressed with improved input sanitization. (CVE-2018-4462)
  • Clear History and Website Data; does not clear the history. The issue was addressed with improved data deletion. (CVE-2018-4445)
  • This issue was addressed with improved entitlements. (CVE-2018-4446)

Actions: 
  • After appropriate testing, immediately apply patches provided by Apple to vulnerable systems.
  • Run all software as a non-privileged user (one without administrative privileges) to diminish the effects of a successful attack.
  • Remind users not to download, accept, or execute files from un-trusted or unknown sources.
  • Remind users not to visit untrusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or un-trusted sources.
  • Apply the Principle of Least Privilege to all systems and services.
