Overview: 

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in iOS, tvOS, watchOS, High Sierra, Sierra, and El Capitan. The most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow for arbitrary code execution.

  • iOS is a mobile operating system for mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
  • tvOS is an operating system for the fourth-generation Apple TV digital media player.
  • watchOS is the mobile operating system for the Apple Watch and is based on the iOS operating system.
  • High Sierra is a desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers.
  • Sierra is a desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers.
  • El Capitan is a desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers.

Successful exploitation of the most severe of these vulnerabilities could result in arbitrary code execution within the context of the application, an attacker gaining the same privileges as the logged-on user, or the bypassing of security restrictions. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

December 13 - UPDATED OVERVIEW:

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in iTunes, Safari, and iCloud. The most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow for arbitrary code execution.

  • iTunes is a media player, media library, online radio broadcaster, and mobile device management application developed by Apple.
  • Safari is a web browser available for OS X and Microsoft Windows.
  • iCloud is a cloud storage service.

THREAT INTELLIGENCE:

There are currently no reports of these vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild.

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in iOS, tvOS, watchOS, High Sierra, Sierra, and  El Capitan. The most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow for arbitrary code execution. Details of these vulnerabilities are as follows:

  • A logic issue existed in the handling of state transitions. This was addressed with improved state management. (CVE-2017-13080)

  • A memory corruption issue was addressed through improved state management. (CVE-2017-13847)

  • An encryption issue existed with S/MIME credentials. The issue was addressed with additional checks and user control. (CVE-2017-13860)

  • An inconsistent user interface issue was addressed with improved state management. (CVE-2017-13871)

  • An input validation issue existed in the kernel. This issue was addressed through improved input validation. (CVE-2017-13848, CVE-2017-13858)

  • An out-of-bounds read issue existed in the FTP PWD response parsing. This issue was addressed with improved bounds checking. (CVE-2017-1000254)

  • An out-of-bounds read issue existed in X.509 IPAddressFamily parsing. This issue was addressed with improved bounds checking. (CVE-2017-3735)

  • An out-of-bounds read issue existed that led to the disclosure of kernel memory. This was addressed through improved input validation. (CVE-2017-13878)

  • An out-of-bounds read was addressed through improved bounds checking. (CVE-2017-13875)

  • An out-of-bounds read was addressed with improved bounds checking. (CVE-2017-13833)

  • A permissions issue existed in the handling of screen sharing sessions. This issue was addressed with improved permissions handling. (CVE-2017-13826)

  • A S/MIME issue existed in the handling of encrypted email. This issue was addressed through improved selection of the encryption certificate. (CVE-2017-13874)

  • A type confusion issue was addressed with improved memory handling. (CVE-2017-13855)

  • A validation issue was addressed with improved input sanitization. (CVE-2017-13865, CVE-2017-13868, CVE-2017-13869)

  • Multiple issues were addressed by updating to version 2.4.28. (CVE-2017-9798)

  • Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed with improved memory handling. (CVE-2017-13844, CVE-2017-13861, CVE-2017-13862, CVE-2017-13867, CVE-2017-13876, CVE-2017-13879, CVE-2017-13883)

  • Multiple validation issues were addressed with improved input sanitization. (CVE-2017-13865, CVE-2017-13868, CVE-2017-13869)

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in iTunes, Safari, and iCloud. The most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow for arbitrary code execution. Details of these vulnerabilities are as follows:

  • A privacy issue existed in the use of client certificates. This issue was addressed through a revised protocol. (CVE-2017-13864)
  • Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed with improved memory handling. (CVE-2017-7156, CVE-2017-7157, CVE-2017-13856, CVE-2017-13870, CVE-2017-13866)
Actions: 
  • After appropriate testing, immediately apply patches provided by Apple to vulnerable systems.

  • Run all software as a non-privileged user (one without administrative privileges) to diminish the effects of a successful attack.

  • Remind users not to download, accept, or execute files from un-trusted or unknown sources.

  • Remind users not to visit untrusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or un-trusted sources.

  • Apply the Principle of Least Privilege to all systems and services.
