Overview: 

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in DotNetNuke (DNN), which could allow for remote code execution if a file containing specially crafted code is uploaded. DotNetNuke is an open-source web content management system.

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow for remote code execution in the context of the user associated with the service. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than those who operate with administrative user rights.

Due to ongoing activities reported by trusted sources and due to an abundance of caution, we are updating his advisory to emphasize the importance of applying all updates provided by this Security Alert as soon as possible. The vulnerabilities specific to CVE-2017-11317 and CVE-2017-11357 are being actively exploited in the wild.

Description: 

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in DotNetNuke (DNN), which could allow for remote code execution if a file containing malicious code is uploaded. These vulnerabilities exist due to security issues within the Telerik component (Telerik.Web.UI.Dll assembly) of DNN. Three remote code execution vulnerabilities exist when a file is uploaded to a location that could allow for auto-processing of files and therefore the code contained within. (CVE-2017-11317, CVE-2017-11357, CVE-2014-2217)

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow for remote code execution in the context of the user associated with the service. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than those who operate with administrative user rights.

Actions: 
  • After appropriate testing, immediately apply appropriate hotfix patches provided by DNN and Telerik to vulnerable systems.
  • Apply the Principle of Least Privilege to all systems and services.
