Overview: 

A vulnerability has been discovered in the Microsoft Scripting Runtime Object Library that could allow remote code execution. Microsoft Scripting Runtime Object Library is used when running scripts such as the ones used on websites to enhance usability.  This vulnerability could exploited if a user to visit a specially crafted website. Successful exploitation could result in the attacker gaining the same user rights as the current user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Description: 

A vulnerability has been discovered in the Microsoft Scripting Runtime Object Library that could allow remote code execution.  This vulnerability is caused by the Microsoft Scripting Runtime Object Library improperly handling an object in memory. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by a user to visit a specially crafted website. Successful exploitation could result in the attacker gaining the same user rights as the current user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Actions: 
  • Apply appropriate patches provided by Microsoft to vulnerable systems immediately after appropriate testing.
  • Run all software as a non-privileged user (one without administrative privileges) to diminish the effects of a successful attack.
  • Remind users not to visit un-trusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or un-trusted sources.
